Flaking and itching are two common symptoms associated with dandruff. However, these changes are seen in other skin conditions as well. The presence of patches on the scalp can be suggestive of conditions other than dandruff. It is important to consult a dermatologist who can give a specific diagnosis and treat it accordingly. Seborrheic dermatitis is characterised by red, scaly patches on the scalp. It may be associated with severe itching for a long time. Psoriasis is a condition that can cause severe flaking and makes the scalp look dry. Tinea capitis or ringworm is a highly infective fungal infection of the scalp. It can even cause hair loss. These conditions require different treatments in the form of antifungals or steroids as per the diagnosis. It is not advisable to use products without knowing the diagnosis.
