Dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis is a type of fungal infection that affects the hair and skin, sometimes even the face, especially over the eyebrows and behind the ears. These areas often look red and dry with scaling of the skin. Ketoconazole (KZ) products are commonly prescribed as a treatment for this condition. In some cases, they can be used in combination with zinc pyrithione or salicylic acid. These ingredients help control the white flakes. Using oil when you have dandruff is not advisable. Even though the scalp feels dry because of white flakes, dandruff is not related to the dryness of the skin. It is a fungal infection. The lipid base provided by oil can increase the growth of the fungal elements. This means that it might take longer for dandruff to clear if you are using oil. Dandruff takes time to get treated, and it can even reappear after some time. It is advisable to use prescribed and medicated products only.
