Dandruff by itself is not usually associated with severe hair fall. If you're suffering from severe hair fall, the first step is to find the cause. This may require an examination by a doctor and some further tests. There is a condition associated with dandruff known as seborrheic dermatitis. In this case, there may be redness or irritation in the scalp and thick scales. A disease known as psoriasis also affects the hair and can cause scaling and severe hair fall. Regular anti-dandruff shampoos are not sufficient to treat these other conditions. They may need additional lotions containing steroids or salicylic acid. This is to make sure that the flakes are cleared from the scalp. You may also be prescribed certain tablets to counter your condition. A visit to a dermatologist is required to find the reason behind your hair fall. Only after that can an appropriate mode of treatment be recommended for your condition.
