Type 1 diabetes is a permanent genetic condition in which the insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells are damaged. This causes a lack of insulin, an essential hormone in our body. A permanent cure for Type 1 diabetes is difficult. Stem cell therapy has been tried in Type 1 diabetes. The goal of stem cell therapy in diabetes is to make new pancreatic beta cells that can secrete insulin. As of now, stem cell therapy is considered an experimental treatment for Type 1 diabetes. Stem cell therapy may or may not be successful in every person with Type 1 diabetes undergoing it. However, stem cell transplant has been shown to reduce the dose of external insulin injections. Still, a complete cure is not expected with current techniques. It may change in the future with better techniques.
